Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, reviews a report submitted by Dr. Abdelrazek Desouky, President of Kafrelsheikh University, on the university’s efforts to confront the issue of climate change, coinciding with the launch of the activities of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh.
The report indicates that Kafrelsheikh University organizes many activities, events, conferences, seminars, and workshops with the participation of the university's faculties, centers and sectors; to raise awareness of the issue of climate change, including: organizing a conference entitled “Climate Changes and the Need for a One World, One Health” approach, and a scientific symposium on “Climate changes and the ability to adapt”, within the framework of the university’s contribution to implementing the fifth goal of the Egyptian National Strategy for Climate Change 2050 , which focuses on promoting scientific research, knowledge management, and technology transfer; to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The report notes that the university organizes a competition for the scientific exhibition on climate change in the field of scientific innovation to solve the problem of climate change. It includes 20 innovative ideas for 20 teams from different faculties with a total of 100 students, in addition to the university’s participation with a student delegation in the first student group of the Institute for Leadership Development plan ( Summer 2022) entitled "Sustainable Development and Renewable Energy" at the Youth City in Port Said last July.
The report indicates that the university’s team represented by the “WHOLE FISH” team won the second prize in the “Innovation Incentive” and “Change Makers” competitions launched by the Innovators Support Fund, in addition to the success of a research team at the Faculty of Agriculture, Kafrelsheikh University in producing and registering new early varieties of Cowpeas that are distinguished by their ability to withstand climate changes.
The report adds that the Faculty of Fisheries organizes several seminars and workshops to confront the negative effects of climate change, including: a seminar entitled "The Effects of Plastic Pollution on Aquatic Life", and another entitled "The Recycling of Fish Waste and Its Role in Confronting the Negative Effects of Climate Changes in the Light of the Climate Summit ( COP27)”, in addition to holding a scientific symposium at the Faculty of Science entitled “Climate Changes: Their Causes, Consequences, and Ways to Adapt to them,” as well as the organization of the Faculty of Nursing, the first scientific conference entitled “The Impact of Climate Changes on Health and Disease and Innovative Strategies in Internal Surgical Nursing.”
The report points out that the Faculty of Arts organizes a scientific symposium entitled “Contemporary climate change concept – effects – confrontation”, in addition to the implementation of a series of seminars and workshops by the Faculty of Agriculture on confronting the negative effects of climate changes, including: A symposium entitled “The Impact of Climate Changes on Rural Communities and the National Strategy for Climate 2050", and smart strategies for managing strategic crops under the conditions of climate change in Egypt".
