Higher Education: Inclusion of 7 Egyptian Universities in the Chinese Shanghai Ranking for the year 2022

 Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, reviews a report on the inclusion of 7 Egyptian universities in the Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), for the year 2022, compared to the inclusion of six universities last year 2021.

Dr. Adel Abd El-Ghaffar, media advisor and official spokesperson of the ministry, states that the list of Egyptian universities listed in the Shanghai ranking witnesses progress this year, with an increase in university from last year, as Cairo University topped the first place at the level of Egyptian universities, and in the ranking (301-400) globally, advanced with 100 places from last year, followed by Alexandria University in the place 501-600, advancing by 100 places from last year, then Mansoura University in the place (601-700), advancing by 100 places from last year, followed by Ain Shams University in the place ( 701-800), while Al-Azhar University in the place(801-900), advancing by 100 places from last year, Zagazig University in the place (801-900), and Kafrelsheikh University in the place (901-1000), which was listed for the first time this year.

The official spokesman points out that Cairo University ranks the first among Egyptian universities in the graduate performance index, with 17.7 points, followed by Alexandria University with 11.9 points, and Alexandria, Mansoura and Kafrelsheikh universities score 6.8 points in the Highly Cited Researcher, pointing to the inclusion of (6) staff members in the list of the world's most cited scientists in 2021 from the universities of Mansoura, Kafrelsheikh, Beni Suef, Alexandria, and the Suez Canal, in addition to the National Research Center, explaining that in the Publishing index in the two prestigious journals, Nature & Science, Ain Shams University ranked the first with 3.8 points, followed by Cairo University with 3.2 points, then Alexandria University with 2.5 points, and Mansoura and Al-Azhar universities with two points.

The spokesperson adds that with regard to the scientific publication index, Cairo University ranks the first locally with 42.5 points, then Mansoura University with 32.8 points, Ain Shams University with 32 points, while Alexandria University with 30.8 points, Al-Azhar University with 30.5 points, Zagazig University with 30.3 points, and finally Kafrelsheikh University with  22.2 Point, pointing out that in the latest performance indicator in the ranking, which is "the academic performance of the individual at the university," Cairo University is the first in this indicator, with 18.5 points, then Mansoura University 14 points, followed by Alexandria University 13.7 points, then Ain Shams University 13.4 points, Al-Azhar University 12.7 points, Zagazig University 12.6 points, and Kafrelsheikh University 9.7 points.

 

The spokesperson explains that the Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of World Universities "Shanghai" (ARWU) was first published in June 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities (CWCU) and the Faculty of Postgraduate for Education (formerly the Institute of Higher Education) at Shanghai University in China, and it was updated on annually basis  since 2009, ranking is conducted among the top 2,500 universities worldwide annually; in order to publish the best thousand universities, noting that the ranking depends on six objective indicators: the number of university graduates who won the Nobel Prize (10%), the number of staff members who won the Nobel Prize and the field medal in mathematics (20%), and the number of scientists with High citations included in Clarivate database (20%), number of papers published in Nature and Science (20%), number of papers indexed in the Science Citation Index- Expanded and Social Science Citation Index (20%), and individual academic performance at the university (10%).
