 As part of the continuous successes achieved by Kafrelsheikh University under the presidency of Prof. Yahya Zakaria Eid, and in affirmation of its pioneering role in supporting and empowering women, the university continues to consolidate its position as one of the best Egyptian universities in implementing policies of equal opportunities and the protection of women. It has become the only university among Egyptian universities to win first place in the Egypt Award for Government Excellence in Equal Opportunities and Women’s Empowerment. This achievement reflects the university’s success in building an integrated institutional system based on justice, equality, empowerment, and sustainability, and translates the orientations of the Egyptian state and Egypt’s Vision 2030 in supporting women and enhancing their role in development.

In this context, the university continues to develop its institutional system for the protection and empowerment of women through an integrated framework that includes the Safe Woman Unit, the anti-Violence against Women Unit, and the Psychological Counseling Center, in close cooperation with the National Council for Women – Kafrelsheikh Branch and a number of national and international institutions. This achieves the highest levels of psychological, social, legal, and health care and enhances the quality of university life for all university members.

Prof. Yahya Zakaria Eid affirms that Kafrelsheikh University places the human being at the heart of the development process and believes that providing a safe and fair university environment represents one of the most important pillars of institutional excellence. He points out that the university works according to an integrated vision based on respect for women’s rights, consolidating the values of equality and equal opportunities, and providing an advanced protection system that ensures support, care, and empowerment.

He adds that the university has succeeded in building an integrated model that combines protection, prevention, awareness, rehabilitation, and psychological, social, and legal support through specialized units that work in a spirit of one team. This positively reflects on the psychological and academic stability of male and female students and staff and enhances the university’s position as a leading educational institution that keeps pace with the goals of the New Republic and Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Prof. Yahya Zakaria Eid indicates that this system is not limited to providing therapeutic services or receiving cases only, but extends to spreading a culture of respect for women, raising awareness of their rights, combating all forms of violence and discrimination, and implementing training and educational programs and community partnerships, foremost among them the strategic partnership with the National Council for Women. This contributes to building a more aware and safer university community and enhances the university’s role in serving society.

For her part, Prof. Amany Shaker, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, confirms that the university proceeds from a firm conviction that the protection and empowerment of women is a societal and national responsibility. She indicates that the Community Service Sector is keen to provide specialized programs aimed at raising awareness, spreading a culture of respect for women, and enhancing psychological and social health within the university, in continuous coordination and cooperation with the National Council for Women – Kafrelsheikh Branch, within a unified vision to support and empower women inside and outside the university community.

It is worth noting that Kafrelsheikh University has an integrated system for supporting and empowering women and enhancing the quality of university life. It comprises three units serving women and the university community that work in full integration with the National Council for Women – Kafrelsheikh Branch and a number of national and international bodies, ensuring the provision of comprehensive and integrated services to all university members.

The system includes:

• The Safe Woman Unit, which works to provide a supportive and safe university environment for women, offer psychological, social, medical, and legal services, empower women academically, professionally, and socially, and enhance cooperation with partners to provide the best services.
• The anti-Violence against Women Unit, which is responsible for spreading a culture of rejecting violence, providing support and assistance to victims, receiving complaints in complete confidentiality, and coordinating with the competent authorities to protect women and ensure their rights.
• The Psychological Counseling Center, which provides psychological support and counseling services to male and female students and university staff, organizes training programs and workshops, and contributes to the prevention of psychological and behavioral disorders and the enhancement of psychological health and quality of life within the university.

Achievements Reflecting the Success of the Experience

Since its establishment at the Faculty of Arts in March 2017, the anti-Violence against Women Unit has achieved many accomplishments, most notably:

• More than 5,000 male and female students have benefited from the unit’s services.
• Organization of 90 awareness seminars.
• Participation of 130 lecturers and specialists.
• Presence of unit coordinators in all university faculties.
• Implementation of awareness campaigns on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Egyptian Women’s Day, and the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
• Implementation of student camps and activities, and enhancement of cooperation with the National Council for Women – Kafr El-Sheikh Branch, the United Nations Population Fund, and partner entities, which contributed to expanding the scope of awareness and reaching the largest number of beneficiaries.

The Safe Woman Clinic has also achieved distinguished results in providing assessment and psychological and social support sessions, dealing with various cases of violence, and referring cases to the competent authorities to ensure the provision of integrated care.

In the same context, the Psychological Counseling Center has continued to fulfill its mission through the implementation of dozens of training programs and workshops from which 1,383 male and female trainees have benefited. These cover topics such as building self-confidence, stress management, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, emotional intelligence, communication skills, learning difficulties, family counseling, and many other programs aimed at enhancing psychological health and academic success.

This system works in cooperation with a number of partners, foremost among them the National Council for Women – Kafrelsheikh Branch, the United Nations Fund for Population (UNFPA), university hospitals, Kafrelsheikh Governorate, and civil society institutions. This reflects Kafrelsheikh University’s belief that effective institutional partnerships are one of the most important pillars of the success of efforts to protect and empower women and achieve quality university life.
