The Institute of Nanoscience and Technology holds an Awareness Workshop entitled "Building Capacity in the Field of Integrated and Safe Management of Chemicals at the Academic Level"

2/7/2024

The Institute of Nanoscience and Technology organizes an awareness workshop entitled "Building Capacity in the Field of Integrated and Safe Management of Chemicals at the Academic Level", which will last for three days until Wednesday 3/7/2024, to raise awareness of the importance of sound management of chemical and hazardous waste, under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Abdelrazek Desouky, President of the University; Dr. Mohamed Abdelaal, Vice President of the University for Education and Students’ Affairs and Supervisor of the Institute of Nanoscience and Technology; Dr. Ismail El-Qon, Vice President of the University for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and Dr. Amany Shaker, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, within the activities of the Community Service and Environmental Development Sector at the Institute of Nanoscience and Technology, under the supervision of Dr. Olaa El-Bardi, Deputy Director of the Institute for Community Service and Environmental Development Affairs, and Dr. Khaled El-Kilani, Deputy Director of the Institute for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and in the presence of deans and vices of deans of the faculties.

Prof. Dr. Abdelrazek Desouky, President of the University, confirms that the workshop aims to raise awareness of the importance of reducing the negative impacts resulting from urban activities and chemicals that contain hazards that threaten human health and the environment, through environmentally sound management of chemicals and their safe use, reducing and recycling waste, increasing the efficiency of water and energy use, in accordance with agreed international frameworks, and greatly reducing their release into the air, water and soil in order to minimize their harmful effects on human health and the environment, in order to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Otherwise, Dr. Mohamed Abdelaal, Vice President of the University for Education and Students’ Affairs, points out that the aim of organizing these workshops is to focus on the sound management of chemical and hazardous waste, to ensure a healthy life for all at all ages, to significantly reduce the number of deaths and diseases resulting from exposure to hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution, to significantly increase recycling and safe reuse globally, to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, and to achieve environmentally sound management of chemicals and all waste throughout their life cycle.

In the same context, Dr. Amany Shaker, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development, points out that it is necessary to commit to achieving sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle and of hazardous waste in ways that lead to minimizing the significant harmful effects on human health and the environment, and effectively implementing and enhancing the strategic approach to international chemicals management.

The symposium addresses several points, the most important of which are the integrated management of hazardous chemical waste disposal in research laboratories, the best methods for dealing with chemicals in terms of storage, handling, purchasing, and safe use inside laboratories until the waste resulting from these hazardous chemicals is disposed of, training on the expected risks of storing chemicals incorrectly, the mechanism for purchasing chemicals in a way that saves the university, and the culture of exchanging waste that may benefit other laboratories.
