I) Master’s Program (2000?2004)

My master research focused on petrology and geochemistry of Neoproterozoic ophiolitic rocks and younger granites in Southern Eastern Desert, Egypt. Thesis title was: "Petrological and geochemical studies on the area around wadi Arais, South Eastern Desert, Egypt". The results have been published in two papers that discussed petrography and geochemistry of ophiolitic rocks (serpentinites, podiform chromitites, metagabbros and metavolcanics), their petrogenesis and a new model for the geodynamic evolution of the Arais area as a part of the Arabian Nubian Shield (Neoproterozoic age). Another paper has been published and discussed the petrogenesis of mineralized younger granites around Wadi Arais. In addition, the new geological map of Arais Area (scale 1: 50000) was published during this study.

II) PhD Study (2006?2010)

I have studied metamorphosed and hydrous peridotites (mantle petrology and geochemistry) in the Happo-O’ne complex, central Japan, under supervision of Prof. Dr. Shoji Arai, Kanazawa University, Japan. PhD Thesis title was: Petrology and geochemistry of high-pressure metamorphosed peridotites, Happo-O’ne complex, central Japan. The importance and main achievement of this study have been published in three international papers (Khedr and Arai, 2009, 2010; Khedr et al., 2010). This PhD project reported a retrograde origin of the Happo-O’ne peridotites, and discussed their tectonic setting (fore-arc setting) and metamorphic history. This study helped us to know the features of ancient mantle processes during subduction (Pacific Ocean-Eurasian Plate) and metasomatism above the subducted slab (subduction metasomatism). It also discussed chemical change of slab-fluid compositions (vertical changes) during multi-stage metasomatism of mantle-wedge peridotites based on chemistry of clinopyroxenes (Major, trace and REE) and whole-rock chemistry. Peculiar Cr-spinel (enriched in TiO2 up to 6.0 wt%) was recorded as evidence of Ti mobility and exchanging between spinel and host minerals in micrometer scales.

III) The postdoctoral and current research (2010?2023)

The postdoctoral and current research focused on petrology, geochemistry and economic minerals of both younger granites and mafic-ultramafic rocks to understand factor controlling ore deposits, Neoproterozoic to Mesozoic mantle processes (mantle dynamic, mantle heterogeneity/metasomatism, melting processes, geochemical gradient, and melt refertilization) in Egypt, Oman, Iran and Japan. Neoproterozoic mafic-ultramafic rocks (e.g., ophiolitic and layered intrusion types) and their ore deposits (podiform and banded chromitites, ilmenite and magnetite ore deposits) from the Eastern Desert of Egypt have been discussed to indicate the petrogenesis of these complexes and the origin of their ore deposits. Integration of these data has, among other things, provided new insights into ore genesis, subduction-zone processes, slab-derived fluid compositions, mantle-crust magmatic processes (fractionation, assimilation, and contamination of magmas) and the geodynamic evolution of the Arabian-Nubian Shield and the suture zone of the Arabian?Eurasian collision.

A-petrology and geochemical studies of ophiolitic rocks, granites and layered intrusions

I have, with professors from Japan, USA and Austria, used geochemical data and mineral composition to understand petrogenesis and classification of layered intrusions, Alaskan-type intrusions, ophiolites (e.g., serpentinized peridotites), mineral and bulk–rock chemistry of Shadli bimodal metavolcanics and younger granites as well as their related ore deposits in Egypt. I have also discussed petrogenesis of serpentinized peridotites in Japan to understand behaviors of trace elements during the retrograde and prograde processes.

Petrology and geochemistry of basal peridotites and serpentinites above the metamorphic sole in the central Oman ophiolite have been discussed to understand oceanic mantle heterogeneity and mantle processes. The small-scale (<5 cm) lithological and chemically mantle heterogeneity based on textural, mineral composition and whole rock chemistry was documented. The study can put constraints on the geodynamic evolution of Oman ophiolites during the closure of Neotethys Ocean due to Arabian?Eurasian collision or detached ophiolite section by faults or segments of Mid-ocean ridge.

I have, with coauthors from Iran, Japan, USA and united kingdom, studied the origin and age dating of late Miocene K-rich volcanism in NW Iran, chemistry and isotopic compositions of supra-subduction zone magmatism associated with the Neyriz ophiolite (Iran), mantle peridotites in Late Cretaceous ophiolites, geochemical and geochronological constraints on origin of the Sawlava ophiolite (NW Iran) and Fannuj-Maskutan SSZ-type ophiolite (Inner Makran, SE Iran), subduction initiation and back-arc opening north of Neo-Tethys, and roll-back, extension and mantle upwelling triggered Eocene shoshonitic magmatism in NW Iran. Isotopic studies and age dating have been done for some ophiolitic rocks to indicate rock age, crustal contamination, and contribution from slab-derived components during subduction. In addition, I, with coauthors from Pakistan and France, studied geochemistry of Waziristan ophiolite complex in Pakistan and studied melt-impregnation and metamorphism of Atlantis Massif peridotite (IODP Expedition 357) with coauthor Dr. Scott Whattam (KFUPM, Saudi Arabia)

B-Ore deposits and mineralization studies

I have used geochemical data and mineral composition to understand the source and origin of high-Mn impurities in iron ores from Bahariya Oasis and explained and classified these ores based on mineralogy, elemental mapping, trace, and rare earth elements. This work helps our society for using the Mn-free ores in the steel industry in Egypt, but Mn-rich iron ores for production of ferromanganese alloy. I compared iron-ore morphology and composition in sedimentary rocks (Bahariya Oasis, Egypt) with magnetite deposits in Oman serpentinites to know iron source and origin and to understand iron mobility, metal solubility in different fluid compositions. I have described mineralogy of magnetite deposit concentrated within a nonconformity surface between Aniba serpentinites and overlying limestones in the Southern Oman ophiolite to know magnetite origin and iron sources during serpentinization of peridotites as well as to understand iron mobility/leaching, metal solubility during serpentinization stages, with special reference to factors controlling the magnetite-orebody sizes.

I have used geochemical data of chromite and its mineral inclusions to indicate the genesis of both chromitite types and associated sulphide deposits, tectonic setting and factor controlling the size (volume %) and distribution of chromitite pods. I have firstly studied banded chromitites and associated sulphides in the Neoproterozoic subarc deep-crustal magma of Alaskan-type complex in Egypt to understand magmatic fractionation and sub-arc magma processes. I have studied Korab Kansi mafic-ultramafic intrusion in South Eastern Desert of Egypt that hosts economic Fe-Ti-V deposits as evidence of Ti-rich ferropicritic magmatism. Mineral chemistry and geochemical data suggested that metasomatized mantle due to interaction of lithosphere with upwelling asthenospheric melts and slab-derived fluids/melts in an island-arc setting of high oxygen fugacity and water contents are factor controlling the formation of Ti-rich melts and formation of economic Fe-Ti-V deposits.

I have, with coauthors from Iran, used geochemical data to understand petrogenesis of arc-related harzburgite-dunite-chromitite complexes in Sabzevar ophiolite (Iran), geochemical variability among stratiform chromitites and ultramafic rocks from Western Makran, South Iran, petrogenesis of arc-related peridotite hosted chromitite deposits in Sikhoran-Soghan mantle section, South Iran. These data shed the light on genesis of podiform chromitites and indicate different mechanisms for formation of both podiform chromitite and stratiform chromitite deposits in Iran.

Recently, I have, with my team, used application of remote sensing and geochemical data in detecting mineralized granitic zones (rich in rare metals and garnets) in the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt, understanding genesis and evaluation of heavy minerals in black sands in the Southern Eastern Desert of Egypt, and determine two styles of Fe–Ti-V ore deposits in the Neoproterozoic layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In addition, my team determined genesis of sulfide mineralization and gold-bearing sulfides in Atshan and Darhib areas, South Eastern Desert of Egypt. Formation of banded chromitites and associated Ni-Co-Cu rich sulphides in the Neoproterozoic Alaskan-type complex and petrogenesis of the ~740 Ma Korab Kansi mafic-ultramafic intrusion enriched with Fe–Ti-V ore deposits have been discussed to determine ore genesis and factor controlling their distribution and sizes.

I have, with my team, used application of remote sensing and geochemical data for exploration of rare metals-bearing granites and rare metals (REE, Li, Cs, Ta, Nb, Sc, Y, Zr, Sn, U, and W) that are economically important and enter in manufacture of cell phones, battery, notebooks and digital cameras. In addition, we studied carbonation of mantle and listvenite enriched with gold, gold-bearing minerals in metagabbros-diorite complex and granitoid rocks, beside metavolcanics and talc enriched in copper for battery manufactures.
