President of Kafr El-Sheikh University Welcomes National solid Waste Management Program Delegation

Dr. Abdel Razek Desouky, President of Kafr El-Sheikh University, welcomed a delegation from the National Solid Waste Management Program that included Dr. Soheir Mourad, Senior Expert at the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ); Dr. Ayman Muharram, Solid Waste Management Consultant; and Ms. Mai Muslim, Monitoring Officer at the National Waste Program, along with their team to discuss the latest progress in preparing a manual for implementing the solid waste management system at the university. He pointed out that Kafr El-Sheikh University is "the first university among Egyptian universities" to prepare a guiding inventory for solid waste management, cooperating with the National Solid Waste Management Program, affiliated with the Ministry of Environment, and in partnership with GIZ. This inventory aims to define how to manage waste and deal with it properly within the university. He also emphasized that the program seeks to improve infrastructure, provide institutional support for environmental protection, ensure financial sustainability, and raise environmental awareness.

Furthermore, Dr. Amani Shaker praised the efforts made to produce the preliminary report for developing a waste management inventory at the university. This initiative is supported by the Ministry of Environment and GIZ, which will contribute to enhancing the waste management system at Kafr El-Sheikh University. She also noted that the Community Service and Environmental Development sector will undertake the implementation of the inventory immediately upon its issuance, making Kafr El-Sheikh University the "first Egyptian university" to apply the documented environmental system for solid waste management within the university.

It is worth mentioning that the National Solid Waste Management Program began in 2015, with its core idea focusing on supporting the solid waste management system in the governorates. This includes legislative support for issuing the waste management regulation law, developing the structural plan for waste units in various governorates, and implementing specific studies for each governorate's plan. Moreover, the program aims to develop the institutional framework for governorates, establish waste management units, build capacities, and set performance indicators. It also works on establishing a general framework for planning strategies that are related to waste management, ensuring the link between planning and financing, and guaranteeing the sustainability of financial resources. In addition, the program seeks to integrate all formal and informal workers in the system (such as waste collectors and contractors) to regularize their status. It also conducts technical and economic studies for the waste management system and feasibility studies for waste sector projects in Egypt. The program also provides efficiency enhancement, training, and awareness campaigns for system workers and various segments of society, including the private sector, youth, women, and others.
