The Educational Technology Department is regarded as one of the most important departments within faculties of education and specific education. However, it was long viewed narrowly and restrictively, with some perceiving educational technology as merely devices, equipment, and instructional aids. Yet with the rapid and immense development of the information and communications age, and the technologies and applications that have influenced all aspects of life, the concept of educational technology has evolved accordingly. Technology in general refers to the application of scientific knowledge to solve practical problems; educational technology, therefore, refers to the systematic and methodical application of research and empirical theories related to teaching and learning processes and learning resources, and the deployment of all human and non-human (material) elements in the fields of teaching and learning to address problems, with the aim of improving the efficiency of education, increasing its effectiveness, and achieving the desired learning outcomes.

Educational technology has been shaped by the tremendous advancement in information and communications technology, giving rise to new concepts and applications within the field—including multimedia e-learning with interactivity via the internet, blended learning, virtual education, mobile learning via mobile phones, and learning through intelligent systems for designing and managing learning environments—along with other applications and innovations that, through rapid and successive advances, have positioned educational technology as the future of education.

Within the framework of this evolving concept of educational technology, the Educational Technology Department at the Faculty of Specific Education, Kafr El-Sheikh University, seeks to offer numerous programs and courses that contribute to realizing this concept, raising students' awareness of the importance of leveraging educational technology, and training them in the principles and foundations of designing, managing, and evaluating educational technology innovations—so that educational technology practices become an integral part of teaching and learning processes.
