The “Aquaculture Specialist” is trained to establish fish farms and to manage the breeding of fish and other aquatic organisms on a commercial scale. They are also concerned with fish nutrition, health, reproduction, and spawning, as well as the cultivation of non-traditional marine organisms such as seaweeds, mollusks, echinoderms, and crustaceans. In addition, they are capable of guiding farmers on modern techniques in the field of aquaculture.
Able to design, establish, and manage aquaculture farms and hatcheries.
Able to calculate and estimate the nutritional requirements of cultured aquatic animals.
Able to prepare feed formulations for cultured aquatic animals and assess the quality of feed ingredients used in fish diets.
Able to assess water quality both in the laboratory and in the field.
Able to handle and transport live fish within and outside the farm in ways that ensure their survival and vitality.
Able to evaluate aquaculture farms technically and economically.
Able to handle and preserve fish after harvest.
Able to develop health prevention programs to control the spread of diseases in farms and hatcheries.
Able to diagnose diseases of fish and other cultured aquatic organisms.
