Dr. Yahya Zakaria Eid, President of the University, attended the 8th Annual Conference of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, under the theme “Seeing Beyond,” a profound indication of the qualitative shift taking place in the field of ophthalmology, not only in diagnosis and treatment, but also in adopting a comprehensive humanitarian vision that transcends the boundaries of disease to improve the quality of human life.
This took place in the presence of Dr. Ismail Ismail Ibrahim, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research; Dr. Amani Shaker, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Ali Sabry, Secretary General of the University; Dr. Taha Ismail, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine; Dr. Hatem El-Gohary, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Education and Student Affairs; Dr. Wael El-Feky, Vice Dean of the Faculty for Community Service and Environmental Development; Dr. Magdy Moussa, Honorary President of the Conference; Dr. Mayada Ali, President of the Conference; Dr. Hany Hamed, Executive Director of University Hospitals; and a distinguished group of professors of ophthalmology from various Egyptian universities, as well as representatives of the Egyptian Ophthalmological Society.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Yahya Zakaria Eid, President of the University, emphasized that the conference embodies the Egyptian state's commitment to developing the health sector and scientific research, under the strong support provided by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to the healthcare system. He noted that the launch of the Comprehensive Health Insurance Project represents a historic leap towards providing integrated medical services according to the highest international standards.
The university president explained that Egypt's Vision 2030 places human beings at the heart of the development process and relies on innovation and scientific research as a fundamental pillar. He pointed out that ophthalmology is one of the fields most closely linked to modern technological advancements, especially with the integration of artificial intelligence technologies in early diagnosis, retinal image analysis, and disease prognosis. He added that sight is the bridge between a person and their world, and whoever preserves or restores this bridge is essentially restoring a person's entire life—this is the noble mission of ophthalmology.
The president noted that the conference will discuss the latest scientific advancements in ophthalmology, from femtosecond laser techniques in cataract surgery and vision correction, to intravitreal injections for treating retinal and macular diseases, and advanced imaging techniques such as OCT and angiography, as well as laser-assisted retinal surgery.
Dr. Yahya Zakaria Eid also emphasized the importance of localizing these technologies within Egyptian medical institutions and linking scientific research with practical application, which will contribute to a qualitative leap in the level of healthcare services provided to citizens. The university president affirmed that organizing the conference in collaboration with the Egyptian Society of Ophthalmology reflects the strength of the partnership between academic and professional institutions and contributes to enhancing Egypt's position as a leading medical authority at both the regional and international levels.
Dr. Yahya Zakaria Eid concluded his remarks by officially opening the conference, expressing his best wishes to all participants and hoping that the conference would produce recommendations that contribute to developing medical practice and improving the quality of healthcare. He emphasized that Egypt is moving steadily towards building an integrated healthcare system befitting its stature and the aspirations of its people.
For his part, Dr. Ismail Ismail Ibrahim, Vice President of the University for Graduate Studies and Research, indicated that the university administration places great importance on scientific research and that seminars, conferences, and workshops are an important opportunity for scientific generations to meet, exchange experiences, and engage in scientific communication to discover new developments. He thanked all those involved in organizing the conference, stressing that the goal of scientific conferences is to share expertise in an effort to find solutions to surrounding societal problems and highlight the university's active role in all fields. He expressed his hope that the conference would produce recommendations that serve the wider community.
Dr. Taha Ismail, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University, welcomed the distinguished guests participating in the conference, wishing them success in the important topics discussed.
