SHEET NO. 1
EARTH PRESSURE
Q 1- Plot the
relation between the movement of the wall and the coefficient of earth
pressure?
Q 2- State the main
assumption of Rankine theory for earth pressure?.
Q 3- Explain the
effect of the following in the active earth pressure for any wall:
a) Water Table. b) Concentrated Load. C) Surcharge.
Also explain the relation between the
earth pressure stress and angle of shear resistance?
Q 4- Plot the
distribution of the earth pressure acting in the given walls as in Fig. (1).
Find the total acting forces and point of application of the lateral forces on
each structures and comment in your results. Water level at 3.0 m below the
ground surface.
Q 5- A retaining wall
with smooth back retains soil of a depth 5.0 m, which has the following properties;
? = 18.50 KN/m3, C = 18 KN/m2, and ? = 12o.
The water table level at 1.0 m below the ground surface. Calculate the depth of
tension crack and resultant active thrust when:
·
The top surface is unloaded.
·
The top surface is loaded by surcharge of 30 KN/m2.
Q 6- Comupute the
active, passive and at rest earth pressure for sand having a unit weight of
17.5 KN/m3 and ? = 35o. The sand is placed behined a
bridge a butment that is 6.0 m high. Draw the pressure diagrams for each
condation, and find the resultant.
Q 7- A 6.0 m tall
cantilever wall retains a soil has the following properties;? = 1.92 t/m2, C = 0.0, and ? = 30o. the ground surface is
inclined behind the wall at a slope 3:1above the horizontail. Determine the
normal and shear forces acting on the back of this wall using Rankine's.
Q 8- Find graphically
the max. active and passive earth
pressure behined the retaining wall in Fig.(2) .
Q 9- For the given
retaining wall in Fig. ( 3 ) compute the distribution of earth pressure stress
acting on the wall in case wall move inward and outward of backfill.
Q 10- An unsupported
vertical cut 3.0 m in depth is to be made in stiff clay having a following
properties; ? = 18.50 KN/m3, C = 18 KN/m2. Find the
factor of safety of the cut.
